They lost the toss, and I elected to field first.

Bowling:

Well, the pregame talk was borne out early in the piece.  We held their first partnership to 15, and their second were feeling the squeeze and made 8.  Four wickets in the first partnership, five in the second.

The third partnership were feeling the pressure, and played far more aggressively than they would have otherwise.  Fortunately for them, everything came off, and they lost only one wicket on their way to a partnership total of 62.

The fourth partnership kept the momentum going for a further two overs, getting 31 runs in quick order.  A three-wicket over from Greg pinned them back, and some tight bowling from Chan saw them add a total of 35 for their partnership.

Well, they had 23 runs after halfway, and ended up with 120.  Not a happy camper, but we forced them to play their best.

Shoutout to Greg for his overs of -5 and -1 for a five wicket bag.
Honourable mention to Damon for his -10 and 14.

Batting:
Chasing 120 against a good-quality fielding side like Raiders is possible, but definitely on the tricky side of the ledger.

Chan and Paul got us off to a good start - a solid 22 with just two wickets (both in the last over).

Raiders carried that momentum into the 5th and 6th overs, taking 5 wickets to put Bart and Simon 6 runs behind square one.  However, they dug in and gritted out 23 off the next two overs to net 17 for the team.

Damon and Greg set about righting the ship, and did exactly that.  They scored 40 runs, getting out only once in the process.

Steve and I had the task of knocking out 42 for the last partnership.  After overs of 9 and 10, it was looking possible.  Taking 21 off the third over changed the equation entirely.  We needed just 2 runs from the last over.  The rest is painful history.  2 run-outs and we were looking down the barrel again - Gaz shut me down with some quick deliveries for just one run off three balls to close out the over.  Gah!

Shoutout to Damo for his wicketless 21.

Generally:
Gutting to lose that one.  RaidersX are a sharp outfit (the Wellington Reps for mixed grade I believe) that have some very capable players.  We pushed them so hard that their best players absolutely had to rise to the occassion - which is something we can be pleased with.  I don't especially want to dwell on this game, so will instead have a look at the season overall.

Season overview:
A 16 game season, with 9 wins, 6 losses and one heart-stopping draw.  We averaged 107 when batting, and on average conceded 97 when in the field.

I'd like to see us average at least 112, which is just a run a ball.  If we can average 8 or less outs in a game (that's just one out each), we should be easily able to do this.

It'd be good to aim for a flawless record against the lower teams.  This season, we dropped narrow losses to the Tradesmen and Mighty Blacks (incorrectly recorded as Jungle Fever).

Our attention to quad-points paid dividends this season, with us taking more quad points (aka bonus points/BP) than any other team in our grade.  Let's continue with that this coming season.

One of the noticable changes this season was that we managed to pretty much eliminate negative partnerships.  This has a large effect on our total scores, which have risen significantly.  Our ideal situation should be four partnerships of 30-something - like we did against when we scored 129 against the Tradesmen.  It can be a nice relaxed batting pace for all partnerships, and still sets a daunting total.

If anyone else would like to take over the captaincy, or recommend another, I'd be happy to stand aside.  Bart's captaincy win ratio (65%) would indicate him as a likely candidate - especially now he's back from injury.

Some of you like to set goals, some won't.  For the former, I encourage you to look at your personal stats for this season, and determine now what you'd like to achieve in the coming season.  For me, I'd like to score 300 runs in a season and average 2 wickets a game (34 for a 16 game season).  Oh, and I want that batting trophy off Damon!

Hey I'll be captain - er, hang on...

I'll be captain if it assists in a general increase in my batting average and a decrease in my bowling average...

So - were my personal statistics better when I was captain or when I'm not captain?

There's a query for you to fire against the DB Damo!!!

Well you certainly seem to bat a lot better when you ARE captain - even the bowling is better......so I guess you can now answer Callum's questions ;-)

You've played a game WITHOUT makeup?!?!?
