I won the toss, and elected to field first.
Bowling:
Their first partnership got out only three times in their score of 13. They didn't hit anything out of the frontcourt, collecting ones and twos. When batsmen do this, we need to have our backcourt fielders tight up to the line to add to the pressure.
Their second partnership swung a bit more often, but didn't connect a whole lot. They too lost three wickets, but scored 24.
The third partnership also swung the bat at it quite a bit, but without alot of success. They got out five times in their partnership of 19.
Their final partnership contained their best batsmen, and accordingly they top-scored with a one wicket 29.
Shoutout to Damon for his bowling which was fierce. I lost track of the number of yorker-length deliveries he bowled, and the stumping in his second over (which had 4 dot balls) was due to the batsman getting frustrated with the length and charging.
Honourable mention to Simon for his overs of -3 and 2 including a five-wicket bag. Good to see the break hasn't hurt at all.
Honourable mention to Greg, who saw alot of work in his corner of the field, and effected quite a few catches.
Batting:
Paul and Chan led us off in search of a good start - which the certainly did! They top-scored with 37, and a balanced partnership with 14 and 11 respectively. Just two wickets fell, which is a good target for us all.
Greg and Damo would be in next chasing 25 for the quad, which they eventually managed (getting 30) with a few flutters. While they scored freely, they also got out five times - which hobbled their score.
Bart and Simon were in third, chasing the target of 20. They set it up well, taking 20 runs off the first three overs. However, the final over saw two wickets fall for -1, leaving the third quads tied at 19 runs each.
Steve and I batted last, chasing 30 as our target (we were one run ahead of their total when we went in). Steve batted marvellously, and I couldn't seem to find the middle of the bat. I put us in a bit of a tough spot, requiring 13 off the last over which was being bowled by one of their better bowlers. Fortunately, we rose to the occasion to take 15 off the over.
Shoutout must go to Steve for his superb batting. No dot balls or wickets in his innings, and a strike rate of 200.
Honourable mention to Chan for his one-wicket 11. Good to see those outs drying up.
Honourable mention to Bart for hitting that three off the last ball of the partnership to tie the quad.
Generally:
We've definitely got the better of these guys, though they have improved. They offered far less chances than past games, and we took only 13 wickets compared to the 14 outs we conceded. It's unusual to see that, as normally the team that gets out more, loses. I think alot of our batsmen (myself most definitely included) went out there expecting to hit up large, and instead got out often. Partially as a result, we posted our lowest ever total against these guys (this time 118, previously 124, 160, 175).
This is a team we should be looking to take 15+ wickets against, and hold to somewhere around the 75 mark. In that respect, we gave away a few too many, but our batting was the main underperformance.
I don't know what happens with the point for that third quad, and it really doesn't matter. That was our last pool game, and we'll be facing Palliser for a berth in the final next Thursday. For those of you who haven't been following, we are second placed on the table (before last nights game, we were 4 points behind Palliser).
Personally:
Took an injury to my finger on the second over of the match while fielding an overthrow. It was a bit damned uncomfortable, but my second over was more successful than my first, so I'm buggered if I know how that works. The finger is a delightful shade of deep purple now, but the swelling has gone down and movement is good and comfortable.
Quite happy to get a couple of wickets (both run-outs) to take me to 27 for the season, needing three to hit the target I've set myself.
A couple of run-outs, which is unusual for Steve and I. My main problem was I just kept getting a piece of the ball, rather than middling the sucker. Three outs for 6 runs was a bit lacklustre, but enough to put me within two runs of Damo's record for most runs in a season (269).
