I lost the toss, and they elected to field first.
Batting:
Paul and Chan led off, and Gatch fired again with a wicket less 17 off 13
balls. Remarkably, Chan got out only once and the partnership posted 30 -
getting us off on the right foot.
The next partnership of Damo and Greg would set 34, with a wicket to each
batsman. Probably fair to say this was our best partnership, as they top
scored and were given no extras.
Myself and Bart would set a solid 33 for the third partnership - despite the
three wickets. We each tried to slam deliveries from the pie-chucker in the
orange shirt, and both were caught out off shots we just didn't get a hold
of.
As both teams were playing with seven, their captain offered an unusual
suggestion: choose from your own team who bats and bowls again. I took him
up on it. After a quick rock-scissor-paper with Damon, I stayed on the
pitch to partner Katene for the fourth partnership. Had I seen the
scoresheet at this stage, I would have put Damon straight in, as he (like
many others) scored more than I.
Katene and I would get out once each, setting a total of 32. Katene kept
getting bat on ball, and I took control of the calling to see the strike
rotate plenty.
Shoutout to Bart, who with his score of 13 would raise his average into the
positives for this season. He looked solid out there, and I suspect he's
got his eye back in.
Honourable mention to Damon with his top-scoring 22 off 14 deliveries.
Partnerships of 30, 34, 33, 32. If we could do that every week, we'd be
picking up and awful lot of 8-0 wins. A true team batting performance with
no exposed weaknesses. We scored 129, with some pretty conservative
strokeplay - the difference being we got out only 8 times as a team.
Bowling:
Quite happy was I to see that they were without their star batsman, who
scored 38 against us last time.
Nonetheless, their first partnership was reasonably competent, but they came
up against some good bowling and fielding that restricted their total to 18.
Chan's over of 7 was particularly good, taking 4 edges but just unlucky that
Steve wasn't playing :P
Their next partnership would score 22, though we took four wickets. They
needed 8 runs off the last over to win the quad, which makes Damon's over
of -4 particularly impressive.
The third partnership scored 12, which could have easily been alot more had
it not been for Chan's over of -17 (three run-outs, one bowled).
Their last partnership needed a piffling 78 for the win, and 33 for the
quad. We didn't let the boot off the throat, as we've done in this position
in the past. We kept the pressure on, and the intensity up to hold them to
just 11. There were particularly good overs from Bart (2) and Damo (-6) who
got two wickets each for their trouble.
Shoutout to Chan for his three overs at -1, which could have been much
lower.
Honourable mention to Damon for his three overs at -6. He doesn't need a
shoutout cause he's got the MVP with a net contribution of 28 ;)
Honourable mention to Katene for throwing himself around in the field more than, well, anyone.
Generally:
We took 16 wickets, and got out only 8 times - this was the cornerstone of
our win. We took all quad points for a comprehensive 8-0 win (a margin of
66 runs).
Last week, we atoned for the loss to Raiders, this week we atoned for the
7-1 loss to the Tradesmen. Let's carry this form through for the few games
left in the season and into the finals series.
Personally:
I'm falling behind schedule to get 30 wickets for the season, so I need a
shot in the arm to boost those figures.
Mildly irritated at the needless outs (all caught) in my batting, 2 wickets
in this first and 1 in the second. The guy who was bowling short to me
underlined I may need a different tactic to short bowling - I didn't give
him any wickets, but I barely played a shot either.
