I won the toss, and elected to field first.
Bowling:
Their first partnership probably got a few more runs than reasonable, given their start. While the guy in black was pretty devastating in reaching the backnet, we bowled a favourable line and length to him.
Their second partnership weren't that good, but still walked away with 22. Damo bowled two overs to this partnership - as his first over was so successful, and I wasn't going to be able to bowl him in overs 15 or 16 where I wanted to, I offered him a second shot at the batsmen. He created a couple of chances which we couldn't capitalise on. The Incredible Bulk may be slow between wickets, but he knows how to run a line that gets in the way. I noticed that he backed up a great deal - a quick take by the keeper and throw may produce a run-out, or force him to back up less, creating a run-out at the other end.
The third partnership was the two tall left handers. Despite not looking too convincing, they put on about 35-40ish - both were quite quick between the wickets and we didn't get many run-outs from memory. These two took the score through to 90.
Their last partnership were dabblers, and ground out a solid 28 with a few wickets.
Chan bowled more extras than usual, but the team as a whole bowled less than usual - conceding 22 runs to extras.
Shoutout to Gary for his overs of -1 and 2, with two wickets.
Batting:
With seven, we had a bit of a re-jig of the batting order - as the original combinations I had planned had to be reworked.
Paul and I started off, and it made for some entertaining cricket. There would have been at least 6 good chances to be run-out, and they managed only one. With the low wicket count, Paul and I managed to score 45 for the first partnership - securing a quad-point. I thought our calling was actually pretty good, with only one major stuff up, which resulted in me sprawled on the ground with some grazes and Paul standing next to me - remarkably, this wasn't runout.
Simon and Gary were next in, and seemed to get out quite a bit - I think they ended up with about 15 or so.
Greg and Damo were third, and it was make or break time. If they could bring the score to 90-95ish, then the fourth partnership would be in striking distance. Sitting on 84 (from memory) in the last over, it looked possible - despite the somewhat erratic method in which they'd gotten there. However, the wheels fell off in the last over with about three wickets falling.
Chan was the 7th batsman, and they chose Simon as his batting partner. To cut the story short, they needed 36 to win it, 29 to lose but gain the quad, and they got 9. Que cera.
Shoutout to Gatch for his 21 off 12 balls. He's been batting well so far this season, and walked away with the rewards of a wicketless innings this time.
Honourable mention to Damon for his 23 off 14 balls. Nice knock, with three backnets and only one wicket.
Generally:
We played reasonably well in the field (not outstandingly, but better than average) and with an eighth player (Steve or Bart say) we probably could have held them to 100-105ish. Our batting needed to be very good by our standards to get 119 against Palliser - we started well but got out far too often in later partnerships. Our batting was helped by their fielding being diabolical by their standards.
A 7-1 loss, which in the end wasn't too close, but close enough that we can rue our missed opportunities.
Gold star award to Greg and Damo for sneaking two extra runs on one play - it was worth it just to see their captain's reaction.
As we are all right-handed bowlers, bowling to left-handers produces opportunities that we're not too familiar with. In particular, you can bowl a bouncer at their chest height - which with the extra angle of bowling around the wicket (rather than over the wicket to a right-hander) can tuck them up for space and makes it very hard to dispatch the ball.
Personally:
Happy with my bowling, which was somewhat quicker than usual and they had problems hitting. I shouldn't have bowled that slow ball on the last delivery of the first over, as they had no answer to the first six.
I missed one chance of a run-out at my end (another one of those underhand throws) and botched one drive which then went for four. The run-out to the keeper's end was quite nice though.
Another good game with the Laver+Wood, getting 18 with one wicket - so far so good.
In hindsight, I should have put Greg and Damo in for the second partnership, as only 23 was required to secure that quad.
